Your flight will be with Chief Flight Instructor Wes Head, an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) with over 10,000 accident-free flight hours. His disciplined background as a U.S. Army Ranger and extensive experience ensures that every flight is conducted with the highest standards of safety and professionalism. Our aircraft is meticulously maintained, and we will only fly in conditions that are well within the margins of safety.
Do I need any license or experience to do a Discovery Flight?
None at all! Our Discovery Flight in Homer, Alaska, is specifically designed for beginners and adventure-seekers with no prior experience. We provide a thorough ground briefing to familiarize you with the aircraft and controls before you even leave the dock. All you need to bring is your sense of adventure.
Will I really get to fly the airplane on a Discovery Flight?
Yes! This is not just a scenic tour. From the moment you are safely in the air, you will have your hands on the controls from the captain's seat. Under the expert, one-on-one guidance of your instructor, you will be the one making turns, climbs, and descents. It's the most authentic way to learn to fly a floatplane.
What is the difference between a Discovery and Flight Training?
The main difference is the intended student.
- The Discovery Flight is a one-hour introductory adventure designed for anyone, regardless of experience, who wants to feel the thrill of piloting a plane.
- Our Flight Training is a longer, more in-depth session designed for licensed pilots (Private or Commercial) who want to build valuable, loggable Alaskan flight time and enhance their skills in a classic floatplane.
Do you offer a full Single Engine Sea (SES) seaplane rating?
While our program is perfect for pilots preparing for their seaplane rating in Alaska, we currently focus on providing high-quality, dual-instruction flight time rather than the final checkride administration. The skills, confidence, and loggable hours you gain with us are an invaluable part of your journey to earning a seaplane rating or becoming a proficient bush pilot.
Where in Alaska are you located?
Ahead Above Flights operates from beautiful Homer, Alaska. Our floatplane is based on Beluga Lake, providing immediate access to the stunning scenery and diverse training environments of Kachemak Bay. Homer is a world-class destination for authentic Alaskan aviation.
Can my friend or family member fly with me?
Yes! We encourage you to share the experience. One guest is welcome to ride along in the back seat during either a Discovery Flight or a Flight Training session to take photos and enjoy the view. There is no extra charge for this.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my flight?
Your safety is our final authority on all flight decisions. We constantly monitor the weather. If conditions are not safe or conducive to a positive learning experience, we will contact you as early as possible to reschedule your flight for another time. If rescheduling is not possible, you will receive a full refund.

Are your prices all-inclusive, or are there hidden fees?
We believe in 100% transparency. The price you are quoted is the final price you will pay. Our rates include all Kachemak Peninsula Borough (KPB) taxes and fees, and we never add hidden fuel surcharges or other last-minute costs.
